Holiday Travel to Hawaii: A Warm-Weather Escape Filled With Wonder, Memory & Island Magic
Last Thanksgiving, we traded chilly weather for warm breezes and golden sunsets on Oahu—and the experience stayed with us long after we returned home. As we plan a client’s holiday journey to Hawaii now, I can’t help but relive the magic of Waikiki’s twinkling palm trees, sunrise hikes up Diamond Head, quiet moments in Ko Olina, and the unforgettable beauty of the islands. This personal guide is filled with our favorite memories, hidden gems, and the places that make Hawaii an extraordinary escape for the holidays or anytime of year.
Inspired by our own Thanksgiving in O’ahu — and a new client we are sending to experience Hawaii now.

There are places that imprint themselves on your heart, and for Chris and me, Hawaii is one of them. Last year, as the air grew colder on the mainland and the holidays quietly approached, we found ourselves boarding a plane bound for O’ahu—seeking warmth, rest, and the kind of beauty that only the Pacific can offer. Now, as I help a new client plan her own Hawaiian journey, those memories feel as vivid as the turquoise water that stretches endlessly along Waikiki Beach.

Where Our Love for the Islands Grew: O’ahu
O’ahu is the island we return to again and again—not because it is the largest or the quietest, but because it gives you the perfect blend of everything you want in a Hawaiian escape. It hums with an energy that feels alive and modern, yet just beyond the city blocks and designer storefronts, you’ll find pockets of nostalgic Hawaii where life moves slower and the spirit of the islands feels beautifully preserved. Something about that contrast—vibrant city mornings that ease into romantic, soulful evenings—makes Oahu feel like multiple trips wrapped into one.

The Magic of Waikiki: A Holiday Painted in Sunlight and Soft Breeze
Waikiki carries a special sparkle during the holidays. Palm trees twinkle with strings of Christmas lights, the scent of plumeria drifts through the air, and the ocean reflects the glow of the season like a giant sheet of shifting glass. During our stay, Honolulu felt dressed up for celebration—giant outdoor Christmas trees illuminated the waterfront, and even the hotels added their own festive touches, creating a tropical take on the holidays that felt both luxurious and delightfully whimsical.
Christmas decorations at Waikiki
That Thanksgiving evening, as the sun set over the ocean, we watched the annual holiday parade travel down Kalakaua Avenue from the balcony of Waikiki Shore by Outrigger, where we were staying. Music floated up from the street, children waved flags, local groups danced in colorful costumes, and the whole scene felt intimate and communal. It was the kind of unexpected moment that makes a trip feel personal—one of those memories that stays with you long after the decorations come down.
Evenings in Waikiki became our favorite time of day. One of the most unforgettable moments was Thanksgiving dinner at House Without A Key located at the enchanting Halekulani Resort. It’s almost impossible to describe how enchanting it felt to sit beneath the open sky, sipping cocktails crafted with such care they tasted like island poetry. A live band played softly as the sun melted into the horizon, and there was this sense of timelessness—of being exactly where we were meant to be. This experience alone made us fall deeper in love with Oahu.
We visited the Halekulani Spa earlier that week, a sanctuary of calm wrapped in soft whites, gentle breezes, and a serenity that felt almost spiritual. While Halekulani embodies the essence of quiet luxury, we chose to stay at the Waikiki Shore by Outrigger for a more vibrant energy that matched our mood. It felt lively, local, and fun.
Lounging on the beach at the Outrigger…yes, that is the true reflection of the view in my glasses.
Just next to us on the beach was the iconic Royal Hawaiian, with its blush-pink architecture, it feels like stepping into a postcard from another era. Wander through its halls and you’ll find the history of Waikiki etched into every archway. It’s the oldest hotel on the beach and the birthplace of the Mai Tai cocktail—a detail that seems fitting when you see guests lounging beneath pink umbrellas that flutter in the ocean breeze. The Royal Hawaiian Luau, set right on the sand, felt intimate and deeply connected to Hawaii’s roots.

When Adventure Calls: Diamond Head & Local Flavor
No matter how many times you come to O’ahu, the hike up Diamond Head never loses its magic. We took an Uber up to the base in the early morning hours, when the air still felt cool and the sky had just begun to blush with hints of amber and lavender. As we climbed, the landscape opened into sweeping views of the Pacific, the curves of Waikiki, and the gentle cradle of the island beneath us. Watching the sun rise from the top felt like witnessing Hawaii take its first breath of the day.

After hiking back into the city, we stumbled into a bustling farmers market—one of those sprawling, colorful gatherings where locals sell fresh juice, tropical fruit, pastries, and warm dishes infused with island flavors. We grabbed fresh pineapple juice and devoured a plate of something delicious and local, the perfect reward after our morning climb.
A Glimpse of Old Hollywood: The Kahala Hotel
A short ride away south of Honolulu, the Kahala Hotel offers a completely different pace—a retreat that feels elegant, storied, and touched by Old Hollywood glamour. This is the place where U.S. presidents have vacation and movie stars wander the grounds. The hotel sits along a quiet stretch of shoreline, and as you walk the pathways, you’ll come across a lagoon where dolphins play and splash in the sun. Guests can book a Dolphin Quest experience here, but even simply observing them is memorable on its own.

Pearl Harbor: A Meaningful Pause
Visiting Pearl Harbor was one of the most emotional moments of our trip. It is impossible not to feel moved as you walk through the museum, stand before the memorial, and witness the remnants of history beneath the water’s surface. It’s a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans, and visiting during the holidays made us appreciate the moment even more.

The Quiet Beauty of Ko Olina
As the city softened behind us, we ventured to Ko Olina—a peaceful sanctuary on the island’s western shore. Here, life feels unhurried. Resorts curve gently along a series of clear, protected coves, where the water remains calm enough for children to swim safely and for adults to float peacefully under the warm sun. Ko Olina carries a family-friendly charm that feels grounded and welcoming, with scenic walking paths weaving together each resort like a ribbon of oceanfront beauty.
Ko Olina coast
The Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club became one of our favorite discoveries. The room felt like a beachfront apartment—full kitchen, spacious living areas, and balconies that framed sunsets like artwork. The resort’s oceanfront fireplaces became our evening tradition, offering cozy warmth as we watched the sky fade from gold to lavender. The free shuttles to Ko Olina Station were a pleasant surprise, especially with the outdoor grills and the convenience of preparing our own dinners on nights we wanted to lounge at home.
The Marriott Ko Olina Beach
Nearby, we had the chance to experience a luau by the Mauka Warriors, filled with Hawaiian storytelling and rhythmic performances that beautifully honored local culture. We pre-reserved our Uber pickups to avoid renting a car, though private drivers are also an excellent way to explore the island comfortably while supporting local livelihoods.
Ko Olina is also home to Aulani, Disney’s resort that bursts with color, laughter, and family memories; and the Four Seasons Oahu, a serene, elevated sanctuary where sophistication and natural beauty meet. Each resort has its own personality, which is what makes this area so special.
View of the coast from the Four Seasons O’ahu
Inside the Heart of Oahu: Jurassic Skies and Jungle Valleys
Driving into the center of O’ahu feels like entering a different world. Dense rainforest drapes over towering ridges, and clouds cling to the mountains like a fine mist. Fans of Jurassic Park will instantly recognize the dramatic cliffs and valleys. Touring the filming locations—where dinosaurs once roared on-screen—feels both cinematic and surreal.
Where the Ocean Has a Pulse: The North Shore
A completely different rhythm unfolds as you reach the North Shore. The air feels saltier, the waves grow larger, and there’s a mix of relaxed beach culture and raw natural power that defines the area. Winter brings waves so massive that even spectators feel the energy from the shore. Surfers carve patterns into the water, sea turtles bask lazily on the beaches, and the entire coastline feels wild, rugged, and beautiful.
Staying in this area offers a different kind of escape. Turtle Bay Resort delivers that classic Hawaiian luxury surrounded by miles of undeveloped coastline. The Ritz-Carlton Residences bring a polished calmness to the area, while the Courtyard by Marriott offers a comfortable and well-positioned stay near all the action. This side of the island feels like the “old Hawaii” many travelers imagine—peaceful, untouched, and deeply relaxing.
Helicopter tours from O’ahu remain one of the best ways to understand the island’s shape and spirit. We always recommend taking the doors off if you're up for a thrill—it’s the closest you’ll ever feel to flying.
O’ahu North Shore
A Short Hop Away: Maui
Maui is an easy flight from O’ahu—usually just 35 to 40 minutes—and the moment you land, the island greets you with a softer, more romantic energy. Rolling green hills give way to rocky shorelines, and waterfalls cascade through lush rainforests that feel ancient and tranquil.
One of Maui’s greatest adventures is the Road to Hana. This winding journey along the coastline reveals hidden waterfalls, black-sand beaches, misty jungles, and little roadside stands selling warm banana bread. It’s the kind of drive that invites spontaneity. You’ll want a rain jacket for the passing mists, and a camera ready for when the clouds part and sunlight spills through.
Just beyond Hana, the village of Pa‘ia is a charming stop—a little artist’s community full of boutiques, cafés, and local color.
For accommodations, the Four Seasons Maui—recognizable from The White Lotus—offers glamour that blends seamlessly with the ocean. The Grand Wailea, with its lazy river and dramatic architecture, is perfect for families seeking a resort that feels playful and expansive. For a more relaxed, mid-range stay, the Hyatt Regency in Ka’anapali captures that quintessential Maui charm with ocean breezes and beautiful sunsets.
Snorkeling at Molokini Crater or relaxing at Makena Beach State Park adds a breathtaking layer of adventure to any trip here.

Kaua‘i: A Romantic Whisper of an Island
Flying to Kaua‘i from Maui feels like entering a more secret version of Hawaii. The island is quiet, lush, and deeply romantic—an ideal retreat for couples who crave solace and seclusion. The landscape here feels almost primordial: cliffs draped in green, hidden beaches tucked into dramatic coastlines, and an atmosphere that encourages slow mornings and intimate conversations.
Aloha!
The resorts reflect this tranquility beautifully. Ko‘a Kea on Poipu Beach is intimate and tailored for couples, with sunsets that feel like they were painted just for you. The Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i brings that iconic Hawaiian resort nostalgia, while 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a nature-driven, high-end sanctuary that feels almost meditative.
Kaua‘i is the island where time stretches, where days blend gently into nights, and where couples can stay cocooned in luxury while still being connected to wild beauty. For those wanting more activity, it’s easy to take a day trip to Maui for shopping or excursions and return to Kaua‘i’s quiet embrace by evening.
Relaxing in Kaua’i
Lana‘i: A Desert-Luxury Hideaway for Those Who Seek Peace
Lana‘i is unlike any other Hawaiian island. It feels quieter, drier, and more spacious—an island that whispers rather than sings. Visitors come here not for bustling nightlife or lush jungles but for stillness and the grace of simplicity.
Dry, arid landscape meets deep blue ocean vistas
The Four Seasons Resort Lana‘i sits along a stunning shoreline where the water meets rocky cliffs, creating a mix of serenity and dramatic beauty. Up on the hillside, the Four Season’s Sensei Lana‘i offers an entirely different experience: refined wellness, lush gardens, and one of the most peaceful spa environments in Hawaii. This is a place for introspection, for rejuvenation, and for savoring the quiet moments that travel often brings.
Most of the island’s magic happens on property. Lana‘i is truly a resort-based escape, perfect for travelers who want tranquility, privacy, and an immersive luxury retreat.
The Big Island: Where Ancient Landscapes Meet Quiet Luxury
The Big Island feels like stepping into old Hawaii—a place where volcanic cliffs drop into black-sand beaches and where the earth feels alive beneath your feet. The island’s vast size means every direction offers a different experience: lush rainforest to the east, rugged lava fields to the south, and tranquil resort enclaves along the west coast.
Some of our favorite stays here capture this spirit beautifully. Mauna Lani, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, is perfect for families and multi-generational travelers who want calm, upscale surroundings paired with meaningful cultural programming. Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort, delivers a more immersive and adventurous experience with its thatched-roof bungalows and coastline brimming with natural beauty. For those who prefer timeless elegance, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel blends sophistication with nostalgia in a way that feels distinctly Hawaiian.
Nostalgic Kona Village
The island invites adventure. Hiking through the Kīlauea Iki Crater takes you from lush rainforest to volcanic floor, where steam rises from cracks beneath your feet. A helicopter tour reveals molten lava glowing in dark calderas—one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights. And snorkeling with manta rays at night near Kona is an experience that feels almost mystical, as these gentle giants glide like underwater birds through beams of moonlit water.
Why Hawaii Makes the Perfect Holiday or Winter Escape
What makes Hawaii so irresistible during the holidays is the way the islands wrap you in warmth—both literal and emotional. Palm trees sparkle with festive lights, the air carries a soft ocean breeze instead of cold winter winds, and the days stretch long and golden, offering endless possibilities for joy, connection, and renewal.
But Hawaii is magical in every season. Travelers seeking cultural experiences should consider visiting during Prince Kūhiō Day in March, the vibrant Merrie Monarch Festival in April, the floral celebrations of Lei Day in May, the Obon Festivals in the summer months, or the sweeping celebrations of the Aloha Festivals in September. Each event offers a window into the islands’ heritage and a meaningful way to connect with local culture.

Meet the Founders Behind Nomadtique
Where passion, curiosity, and a shared love of wandering beautifully come together.
Where passion, curiosity, and a shared love of wandering beautifully come together.
Some ideas arrive suddenly—like sunlight breaking through clouds. Others arrive softly, like a whisper you were always meant to hear.
For Summer and Chris, Nomadtique was both.
The idea came to life one warm evening in Italy, on a small balcony overlooking tiled rooftops, the scent of lemon trees drifting in from the courtyard below. The trip had been a dream—days spent wandering cobblestone streets, sharing gelato in hidden piazzas, discovering slow mornings, long dinners, and the kind of ease that makes life feel wide open.
It was there, with our glasses raised to yet another perfect sunset, that we realized something simple and powerful:
We wanted to help other people feel this way, too.
Not rushed.
Not overwhelmed.
Not scrolling for hours trying to piece together a perfect trip.
But cared for. Inspired.
And free to experience a destination in all its beauty.
That’s how Nomadtique began—on a trip that reminded us how meaningful travel can be when it’s crafted with intention.
A Journey Rooted in Shared Curiosity
We’ve always shared a love for wandering. Long before Italy, we spent years exploring the world—separately and together.
Summer’s Story
Summer’s passport has been well-loved for years. From living in Shanghai, Kampala, and Christchurch, to traveling through Southeast Asia, Oceania, East Africa, and Southern Africa, she has always chased experiences that stretch the mind and soften the heart. She built a career in public health as a nurse scientist, ran a water-sports business in the Florida Keys, and planned her own journeys with the care of a nurse, the mind of a researcher, and the eye of an artist.
Enjoying the sunset in Capri, Italy
Climbing down to Kelingking Beach, Bali Nusa Penida
Chris’s Story
Chris brought his own sense of adventure, warmth, and curiosity. With a career rooted in customer service and hospitality, he has an instinctive understanding of what makes people feel welcomed and taken care of. He’s the one who always asks the right questions, finds the local gems, and ensures every moment of a trip feels effortless.
Together, we discovered that our happiest memories were always tied to the same things:
new cultures, new flavors, new landscapes, new ways of seeing the world—and each other.
Travel was our love language long before it became our business.

The Moment Everything Clicked
That night in Italy, we realized something important:
We weren’t just good at planning travel.
We loved planning travel.
The hours researching boutique hotels? Joyful.
Mapping scenic routes? A thrill.
Finding the perfect wine bar down a quiet street? A calling.
Crafting itineraries that honored a place’s culture? Pure fulfillment.
We saw how our strengths complemented one another.
Summer brought deep global experience, design, and impeccable organization.
Chris brought warmth, customer care, and the intuition that turns a good trip into an extraordinary one.
And together, we wanted to help travelers do more than visit destinations—
we wanted them to experience them.
Slowly. Beautifully. Intentionally.
